WAITING ON THE TIME
© Kelly McQuillan 2012 I gave you shelter, and warmth in the cold You fed my hunger; you fed my soul. Plans hatched, desires shared, Of future falls we were unaware. In stolen time the walls came down, Crumbling into waves of sound. We were waiting, waiting, waiting on the time. Waiting to cross over...to the other side. I didn't know, didn't know, it never crossed my mind, That I'd be leaving you behind. You told me of your restless heart You let me see your pain You shared your desperation But I couldn't hear the rain. We were waiting, waiting, waiting on the time. Waiting to cross over...to the other side. Bitter seed of regret Is sitting on my tongue When I look back On what we have become Happiness has found us in surprising ways But sometimes I miss you I miss our waiting days Waiting, waiting, waiting on the time Waiting to cross over...to the other side. I didn't know, didn't know, it never crossed my mind That I'd be leaving you behind That I'd be leaving you behind. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ IN HER SHADOW © Kelly McQuillan 2012 She's the one you'll run to When your heart's set to explode With happiness or tears Your precious moments on this road. She's the one you'll look to When you're not sure where to go Fly on past my outstretched hands Into her flickering glow. In her shadow I will live In her shadow I may die But I'll bear all this for just one chance To shine in your eyes Even though I wear the mantle Embrace our time with heart and soul To you I am a substitute Imposter in a role I feel your eyes upon me I feel you catch your touch I feel your careful laughter You're afraid...to give away too much In her shadow I will live In her shadow I may die But I'll bear all this for just one chance To shine in your eyes It's a hard place to exist in It's a double-sharpened blade My frightened heart must learn to dwell In the choices we have made Continue on my way Along this tightrope in the fog Ready to catch your loving crumbs I'll be a faithful dog. In her shadow I will live In her shadow I may die But I'm holding on for the chance That one day... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ BEST BE GETTING HOME NOW © Kelly McQuillan 2012 Let's share our secrets You and I Sit down with me and pass the time Spin our wishes into rhyme But you're not ready for this dance Not prepared to take the chance To open up your guarded door We'd best be getting home now. It was always hard to know you Things got in the way Another road, another light Another night has run away. I see it in the mask Fallen on your eyes The words on your tongue are no surprise We'd best be getting home now I caught a glimpse in the dark Of a soul torn apart But you won't let me in Behind that stoic grin To warm your broken heart. So here we sit in silence Beneath the dashboard glow Missed chances, missed connections Missed words whispered far below Dawn reveals our difference Like a siren in my ear The future seems so very clear... We'd best be getting home now. |
WALKING TALL
© Kelly McQuillan 2012 Dressed up for the circus show You walk alone in the midday glow Seething mane of warrior hair Eyes bowed down to the judgment stare. Was the battle hard today? Did you fall down to your knees and pray For a smile, a word, compassion's hand? Cool relief from the burning brand? Walking small on the edge Walking small between worlds Your pain is an angry gash Eyes closed, lean into the clash Traversing desert, cracked cement Tortured soul of discontent. Tooth and nail, relief's in sight Fighting on with all your might Straight ahead, don't stop to hide A foot dug in on either side. Walking small on the edge Walking small between worlds Leap of faith, try to forget A lifetime lived in silhouette Deal's done, no coming back One less flower in the sidewalk cracks. Walking tall on the edge Waling tall...into the world. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ THANK YOU © Kelly McQuillan 2012 Today I was digging Digging down through time Tearing through the layers Trying to find some different rhymes Through this introspection This self-imposed reflection I find the one to thank for my direction The music in you Is the music in me The music in you Is the music in me I'd like to thank you For what you gave to me Twinkle in your ready laugh Mischief on your tongue Melody of your eastern lilt You filled the place with song. Fingers nimbly racing over the fiddle strings Waking up my ears You could always make it sing. The music in you Is the music in me The music in you Is the music in me I'd like to thank you For what you gave to me My first dancing partner My little feet carried by yours Whistling out your favourite tune While you whirled me round the floor. Didn't realize and never let you know That the music you gave me, it makes my heart glow... In my darkest hours The music in you Is the music in me The music in you Is the music in me I'd like to thank you For what you gave to me ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ TONGUE-TIED © Kelly McQuillan 2013 Heady wine bears witness To a dangerous game of truth Hands rest on hilts of pride While the rain pours down on the roof You've said your piece, thrown down your hand Your heart's near run I feel your eyes while the clock ticks on But the words they just won't come No the words won't come Till the night is through The words won't come Till it's too late for me...and you There's so much I want to say To help you ease your mind I want to tell you how I'm breaking inside Want to beg you, "Don't leave me behind." But the words won't come Till the night is through The words won't come Till it's too late.... One day I'll look back on this And regret will stain my soul I'll ache for my lover's kiss Because my courage let me go But the words don't come And the night is through The words don't come And it's too late Yeah it's too late for me Me and you. |
