PIANO

COVID-19 UPDATE: 2020-2021 lessons will be held exclusively online.
Apart from providing a positive introduction to music, learning the piano can help build goal-setting skills, discipline, focus, self-regulation, courage, self-confidence, and self-expression. My teaching style is responsive to student need, and lessons are kept upbeat and fun while aiming to develop proficiency on the instrument.
I love teaching piano. It was my first instrument and, as well as enjoying playing piano in its own right, knowing how to play has opened many musical (and other) doors for me over the years. Although I am qualified to teach advanced grades, my heart lies with the beginners/intermediates, as it is here that the door begins to open and the excitement of possibility awakens.
A.R.C.T. qualified, I have been teaching private piano lessons for over 27 years and have worked with students aged 4 to 60+. I instruct students in a variety of styles with all of the technical and theoretical backing they require to help them become proficient, well-rounded musicians.
My studio is now located in Comox, BC.

“Our family had the pleasure of having Kelly teach piano to both our children for almost two years. Kelly is patient, kind, and above all very good at teaching music. Our kids actually looked forward to piano lesson nights, and had no problems with practising during the week! A good teacher makes learning music fun, and that’s exactly what Kelly does. Kelly was also able to assess our kids’s learning abilities to ensure that they learned their lessons at the right pace. We can’t recommend Kelly enough!!” ~ The Rosvold Family.

SAXOPHONE

With background in jazz, blues, classical, and pop styles, I have been teaching saxophone for over 25 years. Lessons include technique, theory, and aural development in a variety of genres. Whether you wish to focus on ensemble playing (for example, high school band) or soloing and improvisation, I can help you develop proficiency and confidence.
STUDIO POLICY
Payment is to be made in the form of post-dated cheques for each month at the beginning of the term of study. Minimum 24 hours notice is required for missed lessons to be made up without charge (excepting illness and extenuating circumstances.)
Students are responsible for supplying their lesson materials and are expected to bring them each week.
Music should be fun, and I have a creative and engaging approach with students; however, learning an instrument also requires independent practice in order to enjoy progress. I will recommend practice strategies and suggest a schedule based on individual level and learning style.
